Toy model trains come in a variety of different scales - one of the most popular types are N gauge trains which have ratio that ranges from 1:148 to 1:160 (this often depends on the manufacturer and country).
The term “gauge” essentially refers to the distance between the rails which in the case of the N scale is 9mm. The name “N Gauge Trains” is based on this distance with the “N” used to refer to the Nine mm.
It is also important note that the terms “N gauge” and “N scale” are regularly used interchangeably and are essentially referring to the same thing.
An appealing aspect of the N scale for enthusiasts is that its small size enables them to build displays and layouts that take up significantly less room the other larger ratios such the HO scale.
It also allows them to put much longer train tracks into their available display space due to the scale being approximately half the size of the HO scale.
However, not all collectors and enthusiasts use the N scale for this purpose - some like to use it to build more detailed or complicated displays and N gauge trains are ideal when this is the goal.
N gauge trains are not the smallest ones available - they are actually quite a bit larger than Z scale trains which have a ratio of 1:220. They do, however, remain a very popular scale of toy model trains.
